Australian singer and songwriter, Emma Yue returns with pop-rock smash, “See You Around.”
Naarm based music act, Emma Yue embodies the youthful, roller-coaster-like energy of your early 20s, and refuses to shy away from vulnerable songwriting. Potent folk, and pop rock music that shines with a distinctive raw beauty, Emma’s creations have the habit of nestling their way into your sub-conscious, strongly laden with confessional lyrics that release cathartic feelings alongside soulful contemplation and rumination.
Emma now returns with the second single of 2024, “See You Around,” co-produced with James Seymour, and perfectly mastered by Isaac Barter. The fresh new track showcases the gifted star’s ability to weave a soulful narrative, against a glaring backdrop of gliding guitars and fully driven synths. Centering the lyrical magnifying glass fully on loss and grief, following the conclusion of a romantic relationship, “See You Around” ideally symbolizes that first glimmer of acceptance after the sudden heartbreak. The new track continues the sonic landscape she has since developed, singing about the “girls who cry in their cars, thrive off spontaneity and have so much room to receive and give love,” lyrically evoking the likes of Taylor Swift.
“See You Around” as a phrase, comes off super casual and nonchalant, considering how she shared such a deep and profound relationship with this person. It does have an incredibly bittersweet taste and feeling at its core, which Emma faces head on, in quite a bold manner. Lively guitar strums, backed by drums open up the track, as Emma’s earthly vocals step in. The build up during the pre-chorus is one of the best sections of the song, as we get a closer assessment of Emma’s vocal range and control, which certainly holds up just fine, to say the least. Displaying enviable vocal clarity, the rising star sweeps listeners off into another world entirely, urging them to understand the present situation at hand.
The verses aren’t the most attractive bits of “See You Around,” as Emma seems to struggle with the pacing of the song and merging it correctly with the lyrics. However, she fully recovers by the time the chorus comes round again, in hushed out, acapella-like fashion. From here on out, it’s pure bliss, as the bridge swiftly introduces an epic guitar solo, washing away any sort of doubt one might have had about the track. It’s honestly one of the best sections of the record, and highlights this creative’s musical ingenuity. The track rounds off in a quite spectacular manner, as the euphoric energy from the instruments and Emma’s now explosive vocals sign off, accepting the path she’s now on, with no more regrets and realizing that she’ll actually just be seeing this former lover, “around.”
At the end of the day, we can’t always get what we want and sometimes, a new beginning is the next and only step we can take in life — and now Emma knows this, “all too well.” With the spirited singer and songwriter fresh off the back of sold-out headlines at several Naarm venues, and with releases planned for the rest of the year, she leans once again inward, ready to face whatever might come in brave fashion, as per usual. Listen to “See You Around,” it’s out now on all platforms.
