Taves delivers raw emotion on “Bad Romance.”
Rising to fame in 2023 with his debut single, Eleyele, after signing to TYE Records, emerging Nigerian music act, Taves set himself apart from his counterparts in the scene with his profound sound. The artiste who makes predominantly fresh Pop music while fusing it with his Afrobeat sound was ordained by fans as one to watch in 2024. He kicked off the year with his two-pack, “Bodija/Folake,” which did amazingly well on streaming platforms, significantly increasing his listening audience. A month later, he would release, “A Million Things,” soon thereafter announcing his brand new project, “Are You Listening?”
Rooted in R&B and Pop, the first track off the record is titled, “Bad Romance” and is a testament to Taves’ writing, storytelling, and commitment not to be labeled as just an Afrobeats artiste. Rather, he capitalizes on the genre’s globalization, which he blends with sounds that steadily form his foundation. The song is a soft mid-tempo offering, as Taves shares his experience of staying in a somewhat toxic relationship. “Bad Romance” addresses being in a situation where people force themselves to be with someone when the signs are clear for all to see that things will not end well. Emotions can lead people to do things that may not be logical, and Taves recognizes this, but is still ready to risk it all, regardless of how it will eventually plays out. He surely comes off as someone who is a rule-breaker, never giving up on the people he loves, regardless of the situation they both find themselves in.
“Bad Romance” paints a portrait of just who Taves might be as an artiste and a person. The lyricism on display is evidence of his natural talent at penning down smart and moving words. Nonconformity in the sound, storytelling, and sweet melody is refreshing to listen to, and his ability to fuse all this with the Nigerian sound is quite laudable and should be applauded. While the track is definitely not the typical “club banger,” it is rich in pure artistry and offers variety for listeners looking for something away from the usual upbeat tunes. He gives a great account of himself as a rising act on “Bad Romance.”
Taves is certainly not afraid to be different, dreaming and reaching for the stars, which he does extremely well with the sound he created on this piece. The track is out and available for your listening pleasure on all streaming platforms.
