Valoe – Love in 3D

Atlanta-based Nigerian act, VALOE re-emerges with a two-track release titled, “Love in 3D.”

Ekene Valentine Okonkwo, popularly known as VALOE, is a Nigerian singer/songwriter, born and raised in Abia State, before moving to Lagos State at the age of 16. With music as a constant presence throughout his upbringing, the young artiste has always been capable of putting together melodious lines, inspired by his environment. He got into music on a full-time basis while in college, playing the guitar and picking up production skills, continuously honing his talent as a rising Afro-fusion vocalist.

Currently based in Atlanta, he has since managed to fuse the genres of Afrobeats, R&B, Soul and Jazz, with a touch of his dynamic and uniquely soothing style into a fresh sound, that yields wonderful musical creations. As an artiste, VALOE is deeply passionate about blending old and new sounds alike.

He made his debut in 2022 as a part of an Afrofusion collective called SOLU, releasing a project, “SOLU VOL 1.” Following a successful run of showcases and opening for some of the biggest Afrobeats stars—Asake, Joeboy and Kwesi Arthur, just to name a few—the rising star is now ready to take on the world with the release of his new two-track collection, “Love in 3D.”

VALOE paints a vivid portrait on the latest collection, exploring the complexities of love—being loved, and loving someone. With these two tracks, he aims to properly depict the multi-dimensional views on what love is, in our society today. “Jeje” is the first track and exudes an enthralling energy that resonates with the idea of embracing life’s simple joys, even if it’s just for only one night. It takes just about twenty seconds before a proper rhythm is integrated to properly commence the song. Familiar drum kicks synonymous with the Afrobeats genre, provide the listener with an accurate sense of direction, in which the song is heading. Verse one intensely examines VALOE’s attempt to woo a potential love interest, accompanied by his soft and assured vocal performance. There’s an air of confidence within the lyrics from VALOE, as we approach the second verse. He continues his attempt to convince his new flame about the feelings he’s experiencing, hoping for a positive outcome. The beat maintains its momentum till the track’s conclusion, with VALOE repeating the word “Jeje” for the most part.

For those unaware of its meaning, “Jeje” is the Yoruba expression for “take it easy” or “small small.” As a whole, the track comes across as a straightforward Afrobeats composition, with a catchy beat and sing-along lyricism, making for a good addition to VALOE’s budding discography.

Second track is titled “Wantin’ More,” and incorporates elements of Afrofusion within it. There’s a calming aura about the song, highlighted by its mellow soundscape and VALOE’s emotive delivery. Due to the minimalistic production, listeners are given the chance to really grasp the depth of VALOE’s vocal ability on this one. He shows us that his performance on “Jeje” was no fluke, and he’s actually blessed with soothing and clear-cut vocals.

“Wantin’ More” shines as a proper love song, with VALOE reaffirming his feelings for his lover. The strong lyricism contain all the right components, hitting all the right notes and putting any doubt about his intentions to rest.
